How Stripe Fees Work

Stripe charges a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed fee per transaction. The exact rates depend on the country where your Stripe account is registered and the type of card used by your customer.

The Formula

If you charge a customer $100 in the US, the math is:

Fee = (100 × 2.9%) + $0.30 = $3.20
Net Payout = $100 - $3.20 = $96.80

The "Effective Rate" on this transaction is 3.2%, not 2.9%, because the fixed $0.30 fee takes a larger bite out of smaller transactions.

The "Charge vs. Net" Problem

Most calculators only work in one direction: you enter the amount you want to charge, and it tells you the fee. But what if you want to receive exactly $100?

Why you can't just add 3%

If you want $100 net, you might think to charge $103. But if you charge $103, Stripe's fee is calculated on the $103 (not the $100), which means the fee is $3.29 and you only net $99.71.

The Correct Formula

To find the exact charge amount, you have to solve for C in the equation Net = C - (C * 2.9% + 0.30). The rearranged formula is:

Charge = (Net + Fixed Fee) / (1 - Percentage)

In our example: Charge = ($100 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.29.

Use the calculator above: Simply toggle to "Desired Net" mode, enter $100, and it will tell you to charge $103.29.

Hidden Fees to Watch Out For

The standard rates are just the baseline. Stripe charges extra in several common scenarios:

1. International Cards (+1% to +2%)

If a customer uses a card issued outside your country, Stripe adds roughly 1% (for US/CA) or 2% (for UK/EU) to the transaction fee.

2. Currency Conversion (+1%)

If you charge in a currency different from your bank's default settlement currency, Stripe adds a 1% conversion fee.

3. Disputes / Chargebacks ($15)

If a customer disputes a charge, Stripe charges a $15 fee (regardless of who wins the dispute), plus the original transaction fee is not returned.

4. Billing / Invoicing (0.4% to 0.5%)

Using Stripe Billing for recurring subscriptions adds an extra 0.5% on top of the standard transaction fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Stripe fees calculated?

Stripe charges a percentage of the transaction amount plus a fixed fee per transaction. The exact rates depend on your region. This calculator uses the latest published rates for the selected country.

Can I calculate the amount to charge to get a desired net payout?

Yes, switch to "Desired Net" mode. Enter the amount you want to receive, and the calculator will tell you exactly how much to charge your customer so that after Stripe fees, you get that net amount.

Are there additional fees for international cards?

Yes. If a customer uses a card issued outside your country, Stripe typically adds an extra 1% to 2% on top of the standard rate. Currency conversion also incurs a 1% fee.
