What is PTA Tax?

PTA tax is the registration fee you must pay to the Pakistani government to whitelist an imported mobile phone on local cellular networks. If you don't pay it, the phone will only work on Wi-Fi and will not accept a local SIM card.

Why does this exist?

The Pakistani government uses PTA tax as a way to regulate the import of mobile phones, protect local assembly, and collect revenue. The system is managed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) through a system called DIRBS (Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System).

The three components of PTA tax

CNIC vs. Passport Registration

You have two options when registering a phone in Pakistan. The tax rates are different for each.

CNIC Registration

Available to Pakistani residents. The tax rate is slightly higher, but the phone is permanently registered to your national ID card. This is the standard option for most people.

Passport Registration

Available to overseas Pakistanis and foreign nationals. The tax rate is lower, but the registration is tied to your passport. If you renew your passport, you may need to update the registration details.

Can you use a foreign SIM? A phone with an unregistered IMEI will still work with a foreign SIM card while you are outside Pakistan. The block only applies to local Pakistani networks.

How to Register Your Phone

The process is entirely online. You do not need to visit a PTA office.

  1. Check your IMEI: Dial *#06# on your phone to find your 15-digit IMEI number.
  2. Visit the DIRBS portal: Go to the official PTA DIRBS website (dirbs.pta.gov.pk).
  3. Enter your IMEI: The system will check if the device is already registered or if it needs to be whitelisted.
  4. Generate PSID: If tax is due, the system will generate a Payment Slip ID (PSID).
  5. Pay the tax: Use the PSID to pay at any bank, mobile banking app, or ATM.
  6. Wait for activation: The phone usually activates within 24–48 hours after payment.
Checking your status: You can also check your IMEI status by sending an SMS with your 15-digit IMEI number to 8484.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I don't pay PTA tax?

The phone will not connect to any Pakistani cellular network. It will only work on Wi-Fi. You will not be able to make calls, send SMS, or use mobile data.

Do I have to pay tax if the phone is a gift?

Yes. The tax is based on the device, not who bought it. Even if someone gifts you a phone from abroad, you must pay the PTA tax to use it with a local SIM.

Can I use a foreign SIM with an unregistered phone?

Yes, but only while you are outside Pakistan. As soon as you connect to a Pakistani network, the block will apply.

Is the tax per phone or per person?

The tax is per phone. Each individual device (identified by its IMEI) requires its own registration payment. There is no annual fee.

Is my financial data sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs in JavaScript on your device. There is no API call and no data collection.
