Why Meta Tags Still Matter in 2026
Even with AI Overviews and sophisticated search algorithms, the **Title Tag** and **Meta Description** remain your most powerful tools for driving organic traffic. They are the "ad copy" for your website.
The Truncation Trap
Google measures titles and descriptions by **pixel width**, not character count. The letters "W" and "l" take up completely different amounts of space.
- Titles: Aim for 50–60 characters (max 580 pixels). Titles longer than this will be truncated with an ellipsis (...).
- Descriptions: Aim for 140–155 characters (max 920 pixels). While Google sometimes rewrites descriptions based on the query, a strong hand-written one often gets used.
The "Self-Referencing" Rule
Notice the Canonical URL in the audit below. It is crucial for SEO that the canonical URL matches the URL you are testing. If your canonical points to a different URL, Google will likely ignore your metadata and use the canonical page's data instead.
