What Is Alphabetical Sorting?

Alphabetical sorting (also called ABC order or lexicographic sorting) arranges items based on the letters of the alphabet. "apple" comes before "banana" because 'a' comes before 'b'. This is the standard way to organize names, words, and any list that needs a predictable order.

Numeric sorting works the same way, but compares values instead of letters. So "10" comes after "2" — because 10 is a bigger number, even though it starts with the digit "1". This trips up plain text sorting, which is why this tool has a dedicated numeric mode.

When You Actually Need a Text Sorter

Sorting a list by hand is slow and easy to mess up. Here are real situations where a text sorter saves time:

Guest lists & invite lists

Sort a list of names for a wedding, event, or school roster so you can cross-check them quickly. Reverse order gives you Z–A in one click.

Product SKUs & inventory

Sort product codes or SKU numbers alphabetically before exporting them to a spreadsheet or an ERP system. Remove duplicates to clean up imported data.

Keyword lists for SEO

Sort keyword lists alphabetically before pasting them into a rank tracker or ad campaign. The result is easier to scan and compare.

Data cleanup

Paste a messy list with mixed casing and duplicate entries. Turn on Case Insensitive and Remove Duplicates, and the tool cleans it in one pass.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Paste your list. One item per line. You can type it directly or paste from Excel, Google Sheets, or any text file.
  2. Pick a sort mode. Alphabetical for names and words. Numeric for numbers. By Length for shortest-to-longest or longest-to-shortest.
  3. Turn on options if needed. Case Insensitive ignores capital letters. Remove Duplicates removes repeats. Trim Lines strips extra spaces. Reverse Order flips the sort.
  4. Copy or export. Click Copy Sorted to copy the result to your clipboard, or Export .txt to download it as a file.

Everything updates in real time — you never need to click a "Sort" button. Change any option and the result refreshes instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Select "Alphabetical (A–Z)" mode. If you want the sort to ignore capital letters, turn on "Case Insensitive." Otherwise "Apple" and "apple" are treated as different items. The list updates instantly as you change options.
Lines are sorted by the number of characters they contain, from shortest to longest. This is useful for cleaning up data where you want to see the shortest entries first. Turn on "Reverse Order" to see the longest lines at the top instead.
Lines are compared as actual numbers, so "12" comes after "2" instead of before it. This is different from alphabetical sorting, where "12" would come before "2" because '1' comes before '2'. Lines that aren't numbers are sorted alphabetically at the end of the list.
Yes. Turn on "Remove Duplicates." The tool removes repeated lines before sorting. The "Unique" stat in the results panel shows how many distinct lines remain after removal. This is handy for cleaning up imported contact lists or keyword dumps.
No. All sorting happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device, and we have no way to see what you paste. You can even use the tool offline once the page has loaded.
Yes. The tool handles thousands of lines without slowing down, because everything runs on your own machine rather than on a server. If you're sorting more than about 50,000 lines, give your browser a moment — but it will complete.
