First‑time permission: Your browser will ask you to choose a screen, tab, or window. Make sure to enable "Share audio" if you want system sound. Microphone access is requested separately.

100% Private & Secure: All recording happens locally in your browser via the Screen Capture and MediaRecorder APIs. The video file is saved directly to your device — nothing is uploaded to any server, not even ours.

What Is a Browser Screen Recorder?

A browser-based screen recorder runs entirely inside your web browser — no software installation, no admin privileges, no license keys. It captures what's on your screen using a browser API called getDisplayMedia(), records it as a real-time video stream, and saves it as a WebM file you can download directly. Because everything happens on your device, there's no upload step, no privacy risk, and no waiting for a remote server to process the file.

This tool is ideal for tutorials, product demos, bug reports, online teaching, and recording browser-based meetings. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS in Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Firefox — the four browsers that fully support the Screen Capture API.

Microphone + System Audio

Record your voice and internal system sounds at the same time — perfect for narrated demos.

Screen, Tab, or Window

Choose which source to capture. Recording a single tab keeps the output clean and focused.

Pause & Resume

Take a break mid-recording without stopping the file. Perfect for editing pauses out later.

Countdown Timer

Choose a 3, 5, or 10-second countdown so you have time to switch to the right window.

Zero Upload

The video file never leaves your device. Recorded locally, saved locally, downloaded locally.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Use Ctrl+Shift+R to start/stop recording and Space to pause without clicking.

What Can You Record?

  • Software tutorials: Walk through Photoshop, VS Code, Excel, or any app while narrating the steps.
  • Product demos: Record a browser-based SaaS product in action for a sales or landing page.
  • Bug reports: Capture exactly what happens when a web app fails — the fastest way for developers to reproduce issues.
  • Online teaching: Record lectures, coding walkthroughs, or whiteboard sessions for students.
  • Meeting recordings: Capture Google Meet, Zoom, or Teams sessions (with participant consent).
  • Gaming clips: Record gameplay from browser-based games or streaming platforms.
  • Social media content: Screen record for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, or TikTok tutorials.
  • Slideshows: Record a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation as a video.

Why Choose SkillsInsider Recorder?

Recording LengthLimited only by browser memoryUsually capped at 5–15 minutes

Pro Tip: Recording a long tutorial? Split it into 5-minute segments instead of one 30-minute file. If your browser tab crashes mid-recording (rare, but possible), you only lose the current segment instead of the entire recording. You can merge the .webm segments afterwards using ffmpeg or any video editor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! It uses the built-in Screen Capture API available in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera. No downloads, extensions, or admin privileges required — just open the page and start recording.
Yes. Enable both audio toggles before starting. The tool mixes your microphone and system audio through the Web Audio API. Note: system audio capture works in Chrome and Edge but not Firefox or Safari (a browser limitation, not ours).
Recordings are held in your browser's memory during capture, then saved directly to your Downloads folder as a .webm file when you click Download. They never leave your device and are not stored on any server.
Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Firefox support the Screen Capture API. Chrome and Edge additionally support system audio capture. Safari has partial support and does not currently allow capturing system audio through this API.
There's no artificial time limit, but very long recordings (over 30 minutes) use significant browser memory and can cause the tab to slow down. We recommend recording in shorter segments for best reliability.
Yes. When the browser asks which source to share, choose the "Chrome Tab" option and pick a specific tab. This is the cleanest way to record web app demos, online meetings, or browser-based games.
The tool exports .webm (VP8/VP9 + Opus), which plays natively in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Windows Media Player and macOS QuickTime don't support WebM. If you need MP4, convert the file afterwards using HandBrake (free) or a browser-based converter.
Most mobile browsers do not yet support the Screen Capture API. Desktop Chrome and Edge are currently the best options for browser-based recording. For mobile screen recording, use the built-in iOS Control Center or Android Quick Settings screen recorder.
Reviewed and maintained — The recording pipeline uses the browser's native Screen Capture and MediaRecorder APIs. If you encounter a bug or compatibility issue, send us the details. Last reviewed: October 2026.
