Reduce Photo Size to Exact KB
Compress photos for online forms, resize them to the correct dimensions, and build print-ready passport sheets. Presets for NADRA, exam boards, university portals, and job applications. Everything runs in your browser.
Why forms reject your photo, and how to fix it
Almost every online form in Pakistan — NADRA, BISE exam registrations, HEC attestation, university admissions, job portals — checks the file size of what you upload. When the file is bigger than the limit, you get a generic error like "file size exceeds limit" or "please upload a valid image". The form rarely tells you what went wrong.
The photo you took on your phone is usually between 2 and 6 megabytes. The typical form limit is between 50 kilobytes and 500 kilobytes. That is a difference of ten to one hundred times. The form cannot accept it no matter how many times you try.
This tool takes your photo and reduces the file size to exactly what you specify — 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 500 KB, or anything else. It also resizes the dimensions when a portal requires a specific size, such as 413 by 531 pixels for a passport-style photo.
What "KB" and "dimensions" actually mean
These are two different things that forms care about separately. Dimensions are the physical pixel count of the image — 1000 × 1000 means a thousand pixels wide and a thousand tall. File size in kilobytes is how much data the image uses on disk. You can have a 1000 × 1000 image that is 500 KB, or the same 1000 × 1000 image compressed down to 60 KB. The dimensions stay the same; the quality drops slightly.
Most forms have a limit on both. Reducing only the file size does not change the pixel dimensions. Reducing only the pixel dimensions does not guarantee a smaller file. This tool handles both at once.
Common Pakistani form requirements
The presets built into the tool use the values below. Always confirm with the exact portal you are uploading to, because requirements change and individual applications sometimes set their own limits.
| Purpose | Dimensions | Typical size limit |
|---|---|---|
| Passport photo (35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI) | 413 × 531 px | Under 500 KB |
| Passport photo, compressed for online portal | 413 × 531 px | Under 200 KB |
| CNIC application photo | 413 × 531 px | Under 500 KB |
| Exam form (BISE Matric / FSc) | 200 × 250 px | Under 50 KB |
| University admission | 400 × 500 px | Under 200 KB |
| Job application / CV photo | 300 × 400 px | Under 100 KB |
| Profile photo (WhatsApp, LinkedIn) | 500 × 500 px | Under 100 KB |
| Daraz / ecommerce product image | 1000 × 1000 px | Under 200 KB |
| Facebook / Instagram post | 1080 × 1080 px | Under 300 KB |
How to use the compressor
Add your photo
Tap the upload box, drag a photo in, or paste one from your clipboard. Works on Android and iPhone browsers.
Pick a preset
Choose a target size like "Under 100 KB" or a form preset like "Exam form photo". The tool sets dimensions and target size for you.
Check and download
The preview shows the exact resulting file size. If it looks right, tap Download and use the file in your form.
Taking a good passport photo at home
The passport sheet maker is only as good as the photo you feed it. A studio-quality photo does not require a studio — but it does require a few basic conditions that most people miss.
Background
Stand in front of a plain white or light-grey wall. No doors, no windows, no pictures behind you. If you do not have a plain wall, hang a white bedsheet or a large piece of chart paper behind your head. Shadows on the background are the single most common reason photos get rejected.
Lighting
Face a window with natural light. Do not have a window behind you, and do not have strong light directly on your face. Turn off ceiling fans or lights that cast harsh shadows. Morning light through a north-facing window is ideal.
Composition
Face the camera straight on. Head and shoulders only. Leave a small amount of space above your head, and crop so your head takes up roughly 70 to 80 percent of the frame. Do not smile widely — neutral expression is standard for most official photos.
Dress and appearance
Wear clothing that contrasts with the background. Avoid white on white. Keep glasses on if you wear them normally, but tilt them slightly down so the lenses do not reflect light. Remove caps or hats unless worn for religious reasons.
Once you have a photo that meets these conditions, the crop tool in the Passport Sheet tab lets you position your face correctly, and the sheet preview shows exactly what will print.
Frequently asked questions
Use the Compress tab. Enter your target size in the KB field. The tool runs a binary search on JPEG quality, then progressively reduces dimensions if the target cannot be reached at reasonable quality. The resulting file size is shown exactly before you download. For very small targets like 20 KB, the tool may need to reduce dimensions as well as quality.
NADRA's online systems typically accept photographs in a 35mm by 45mm ratio, which at 300 DPI is approximately 413 by 531 pixels. File size limits vary between applications, so always check the specific page you are uploading to. The preset in this tool gives you 413×531 pixels; the target file size can be adjusted to whatever your application specifies.
Your photo never leaves your device. All processing uses the browser's own Canvas API, running locally on your phone or computer. There is no upload step. You can verify this by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and using the tool offline.
Most form portals report the size they see after receiving the file. If the tool shows 89 KB but the portal rejects it, check that you uploaded the compressed file and not the original. Also verify the portal's limit is measured in kilobytes and not megabytes. Some portals have server-side limits that differ from what is written on the upload page.
HEIC decoding depends on your browser. Safari on macOS and iOS can decode HEIC natively, so photos taken on an iPhone work directly. On Chrome for Android or desktop, HEIC support is limited. If your photo does not load, open it on the phone first and export as JPEG, then compress.
Use the Passport sheet tab. Upload a photo, adjust the crop so your face fills the frame, and the tool builds a 4×6 inch sheet at 300 DPI containing six copies of your photo at the correct 35×45mm physical size. Save the sheet and either print it at a photo studio or upload it to a local printing service. Do not print at home on a regular inkjet unless the printer produces photo-quality output.
